Victorian, dated 1839 1839 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Ann Bolton. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours black, cream, pale blue, light brown, greens and gold. Verses read ''Ye youths,who run the heavenly race> With fainting zeal,and sluggish pace!> Exert your strength;your zeal renew,> The prize_a glorious crowns''for you!> Behold,heaven''s witnesses decend> To cheer your path,and mark your end;> On all,they fix the admiring view> And shout_Rejoice: the crown''s for you.> Behold the Savour! There He stands,> The prize of glory in his hands:-> The great reward to conqueror''s due:-> The crown of joy_ordained for you.> He guides your steps;and on your heads> His kindest influence He sheds:> His love will bring you safely through,> And give the crown of life_to you.'' A good set of motifs, including flowers, dogs, birds, fruit trees, stars, stags, squirrels, fir trees, crowns, potted flowering plants and angels holding a crown. Generally good. A number of holes. A number of stains and specks. Very minor stitch loss to the border along the top. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 19ins by 13ins wide
