Victorian, dated 1837 1837 Silkwork Sampler by Sarah Paice. Framed in a modern wood frame with glass. Tacked to a wooden board with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on fine linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering floral border. Colours dark green, dark brown, copper, black, light green, gold and cream. Verse reads ''Asham''d of Jesus : yes, I may> When I''ve no guilt to wash away;> No tear to wipe, no good to crave;> No fears to quell, no soul to save.> Asham''d of Jesus : that dear friend,> On whom my hopes of heav''n depend:> No, when I blush-be this my shame,> That I no more revere his name.''''. A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, fir trees, lions, fruit trees, birds, stars, angels, crowns, a heart, potted flowering plants and flowers. Good. Two holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched.
