William IV, dated 1836 1836 Silkwork Sampler by Elizabeth Whybro. Framed in a modern black frame with glass. Tacked to a wood stretcher frame, with card and chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in fine silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours dark green, dark brown, gold, light green, orange, cream and pink. Verse reads ''I sigh not for beauty nor languish for wealth> But grant me kind providence virtue and health> Then richer than kings and more happy than they> May days shall pass sweetly and swiftly away''. Signed and dated ''Elizabeth Whybro Her work 1836''. A wonderful set of finely embroidered motifs, including peacocks, stars, dogs, stags, birds, flowers, fruit trees, fruit basket, fir trees, hearts, crowns, potted flowering plants and squirrels. Good. A few small holes and some losses to the bottom edge. No stains. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing some wear, but is structurally sound. Ready to hang. 16.75ins by 13ins wide
