George IV, dated March 13 1829 1829 Silkwork Sampler by Ellin Whipp. Framed in an old, possibly original, wood frame with black and gilt border and rippled, old glass. Backed with material and tacked to wood. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours copper, cream, blue, dark brown, black, light green, green and gold. Verse reads ''Duty calls me to obay> My god and parants dear> When death calls me A way> I may with Christ A pear''. Signed and dated ''Ellin Whipp Her Work Finished March 13 1829''. A wonderful set of motifs, including a church, angels, a lady and gentleman figure, birds, flowers, fruit trees, fruit baskets, crowns, a building with two figures outside and potted flowering plants. Good. No holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Stretching is slightly uneven. Frame showing slight wear, otherwise sound and ready to hang. 17ins by 15.75ins wide
