George IV, dated 1828 1828 Silkwork Sampler by Hannah Tillett. Framed in a gilt over wood, frame with glass. Tacked to wooden board. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Zig zag border. Colours blue, cream, copper, gold, brown and dark green. Verses read ''Naked as from the earth we came> And crept to life at first> We to the earth return again> And mingle with our dust> The dear delights we here enjoy> And fondly call our own> Are but short favours borrow''d now> To be repaid anon> Tis God that lifts our comforts high> Or sinks them in the grave> He gives and blessed be his name> He takes but what he gave''. Signed and dated ''Hannah Tillett Work''d this sampler in the year of our Lord 1828 Aged ten Years''. A good set of motifs, including a house, birds, flowers, potted flowering plants, hearts, crowns, Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, a dog, rabbit and fruit baskets. Good. No holes. A number of dark, patchy stains. No stitch losses. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame in very good condition, ready to hang. 17.25ins by 12.25ins wide
