George IV, dated 1824 1824 Silkwork Sampler by Jane Roberts. Framed in a modern gilt and wood frame with glass. Stitched to linen and mounted on fine linen with wooden backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours blues, greens, silver, magenta, cream and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and numbers 1-10. Verse reads ''See how the lilies flourish white and fair> See how the ravens fed from heaven are> Then never distrust thy God for clothes and bread> Whilst lilies flourish and the ravens fed> Gay dainty flowers go swiftly to decay> Poor wretched lifes short portion flies away> We eat we drink we sleep but lo anon> Old age steals on us never thought upon''. Signed and dated ''Jane Roberts Anno Domini 1824''. A good set of motifs, some finely embroidered, including a house with a garden, the sun, birds, flowers, recumbent stags, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets and flower baskets. Generally Good. Several holes around the edge and a couple to the centre. Old tack holes with rust staining to the linen edging. A few light stain specks. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Slight colour run around the darker green threads. Unevenly stretched.
