George III, dated 1814 1814 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Hargrave. Framed in an old wood frame with rippled, old glass. Tacked to chipboard with paper dust cover. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches including Algerian eye. Strawberry border. Colours pale blue, pink, cream and gold. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-15. Verse entitled ''A Rule of Life'' reads ''Fear God, let Prudence admonish thee, let Temperance restrain, let Justice guide thy Hand,> Benevolence warm thy Heart, and Gratitude to Heaven, inspire thee with Devotion. Then you will> be happy in time, and Blessed in Eternity.''. Signed and dated ''Mary Hargrave June 28 1814 Aged 8 Years''. A few motifs including flowers, fleur-de-lys and crowns. Generally Good. A number of small holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are slightly faded, but still well defined. No colour run. Unevenly stretched. Frame showing wear and chips, but structurally sound and ready to hang. 13.75ins by 13ins wide
