George III, dated 1814 1814 Silkwork Sampler by Anna Alexander. Framed in a modern wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is finely worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours red, cream, blue, yellow, light brown, white, pink, black and greens. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-9. Verse entitled ''ON A WATCH'' reads ''While this gay toy attracts thy sight,> Thy reason let it warn,> And seize, my dear that rapid time> That never must return.> If idly lost, no art or care> The blessing can restor> And heav''n exacts a strict> For ev''ry misspent hour> Short is the longest day of life,> And soon its prospects end:> Yet on that day''s uncertain date,> Eternal years depend.> Yet equal to our being''s aim,> The space to virtue given> And ev''ry minute well improv''d> Secures an age in heaven''. Signed and dated ''Anna Alexander 1814''. A scattering of motifs, including flowers, a heart, crowns and diamonds. Generally Good. A number of holes. No stains other than slight uniform age darkening of the ground. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are all good and strong with no noticeable fading. No colour run.
