George III, dated 1812 1812 Silkwork Sampler by Martha Hanson. Framed in an old, possibly original, thick mahogany veneer frame with gilt slip and rippled, old glass. Stitched to linen which is stretched over card. Chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours dark brown, cream, dark green, pale blue, black, pink, light green, copper and gold. Verse reads ''Next unto God . Dear Parents I address .> Myself to you . in Humble thankfulness .> For all the cost . that you on me bestow .> The means of Learning . you to me allow .> Go on dear Parents. let me still pursue .> Those Arts . which vulgar People never knew .''. Signed and dated ''Martha Hanson her work in the 11 year of her age and in the year of our Lord 1812 Aston School''. A good set of finely embroidered motifs, including ''The Shepherd and Shepherdess'' with their dog and flock of sheep, suns, birds, angels, potted flowering plants, fruit baskets and flowers. Generally Good. A number of holes, particularly in the bottom right hand corner. A number of stains. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. No colour run. Neatly and evenly stretched. Frame showing wear and has several chips, but structurally sound and ready to hang. 18.75ins by 12.25ins wide
