George III, dated 1801 1801 Silkwork Sampler by Mary Broughton. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on canvas ground, in cross stitch throughout. Meandering floral border. Colours greens, blue, dark brown, gold, black, copper and cream. Alphabets A-Z in upper case and lower case and numbers 1-13. Verse reads ''Tis not in Grandeur peace of mind to give> Nor are those happiest who in Splendor live> Content alone those Blessings can bestow> Which teach the mind with heartfelt Joy to glow''. Signed and dated ''Mary Broughton 1801''. A good set of motifs, including Adam & Eve standing either side of the tree of life with a snake coiled around its trunk, angels, stars, lions, dogs, birds, flowers, fir trees, potted flowering plants, butterflies, a windmill, shepherd and shepherdess with a sheep, and a fruit basket. Fair. A number of holes. One stain. No stitch losses other than to the holed areas. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. The silks bright and glossy. Slight colour run around the verse. Stretching is very slightly uneven. Frame in good condition, ready to hang. 16.5ins by 12.25ins wide
