George III, dated 1769 1769 Silkwork Sampler by Ann Nicholson. Framed in an old wood frame with gilt slip and glass. Mounted to conservator standards on acid free card with chipboard backing. The sampler is worked in silk on linen ground, in a variety of stitches. Meandering strawberry border. Colours red, greens, pale blue, light brown, black, pink, cream and gold. Verse reads ''Virtue''s the chiefest Beauty of the Mind,> The noblest Ornament of Human-kind:> Virtue''s our Safeguard,and our guiding Star,> That stirs up Reason when our Senses err.'' Signed and dated ''ANN NICHOLSON HER WORK 1769''. A wonderful set of motifs, including a pagoda type building a lady in a fine dress on either side, birds, diamonds, flowers, fruit baskets, fir trees, blossoming trees, hearts, dogs and crowns. Generally Good. A number of holes. A few patchy stains. Some stitch losses to the border and motifs. Colours are mostly good and strong with no noticeable fading. Neatly and evenly stretched.
