Beautiful and rare sterling silver gravy ladle by Starr & Marcus of New York NY. Approximately 7" long. The bowl is 2 1/4" x 2 1/4" and about 1" deep. The bowl is gilt inside and out. There is a monogram, Durant. I tried to find out the name of the pattern but to no avail. Marks include STARR & MARCUS, STERLING and PATENT. Theodore B. Starr first appears in the New York City directories in 1862 as a jeweler. About 1865 he entered into partnership with Herman Marcus. The firm is listed as jewelers and silversmiths for 1865 and 1866. They apparently gave up manufacturing their own wares in 1867. Very good condition.
