For sale is a wonderful sterling silver cocktail stirring spoon by Gardner MA silversmith, Arthur Stone. Approximately 2.75 troy ounces or 85.5 grams and 12 1/4" long. No monogram. Arthur Stone was born in Sheffield England in 1847. He apprenticed for 7 years starting at the early age of 14. He also studied at the National School of Design in Sheffield. He moved to the US in 1884 where he worked for Wm Durgin Co for 3 years. In 1887, he moved to Gardner MA to work for the Frank Smith Silver Co as a designer and head of the holloware dept. He also worked for the JP Howard Co of New York. In 1901, he established his own workshop in Gardener MA. Stone was one of the last independent designers and master silversmiths of New England to employ and train other masters and apprentices. He was one of the primary supporters of the Arts & Crafts Movement. He retired in 1937 on his birthday and sold the shop to Henry Heywood. Marks include Stone's 1901-1937 mark with what looks like the initial W and STERLING. This would stand for Alfred Wickstrom, 1912-14. Very good condition.
