Large sterling silver open salt on lion's paw feet with embossed design of roses and lion masks. Gadrooned edge. English Victorian hallmarks for London. The date letter is very rubbed, but possibly an r. The maker 's mark in a quatrefoil appears to be for David and Charles Houle. The monarch's head is present, so 1872 looks to be likely. Very faint initials in the cartouche at the front, but can't read them. The salt weighs 127g. The glass liner is a later addition, but does the job well. Measurements: 49 mm high by 88 mm diameter. Very good to excellent condition, a beautiful item.
