Hard to say what's nicest about this set, the exquisite a la Russe vermeil & sterling spoons, or the hand tooled original leather box. The 12 spoons are intricately decorated with bell flowers, 'pearls, scrolling acanthus finely chased and with mixed metal effect; stunning artistry. The bowls of the spoons inscribed with interlaced monogram "CM". The box is decorated with tooled and dyed leather top, divided into panels. A hunt theme describes the largest central panel. Either side of the top has two panels. one decorated with mythic creatures, wild animals, birds, in floral foliate relief; the other halves contrasting fruited foliate reliefs in varied color. The inside lined with red silk and in fine condition. A truly wonderful and unusual spoon set.
Dimensions: the box is 12.75" long and 6.25" wide. The spoons are 5.25" long. Combined .950 sterling silver weight 204 grams. The spoons bear the maker's punch for Alphonse Debain, active in Paris in 1883, and the .950 sterling guarantee. Condition of all is very good to excellent. The box shows signs of use.
