Antiqiue, sterling silver box. Made by the Gorham Company, circa 1880-1890's. Approx 3 1/2 inches high. Base just under 3 inches in diameter. Weighs 125.5grams. Box may have originally been used as a vanity item, as a tea caddy to store tea, or any other substance. Cylindrical in shape with a fitted lid, slightly smaller in diameter than the bottom. The entire surface of the bottom is luxuriantly decorated in fine repousse work, depicting a variety of flowers and foliage. The extent of the details and the magnificent workmanship are exceptional. The influence of Japanese objects of vertu can be seen in the design which strongly echoes their work, both in style and quality. Similar pieces were made by other companies, but rarely does one see such rich beauty. The beaded rims of the lid and fine monogram AG/AJ are the sole decoration of the lid. The quality of the monogram indicates the overall quality of the box. The box is hallmarked underneath as follows: the Gorham logo (lion, anchor, Gothic G); 655; STERLING. The box is in very good condition with no damage / restoration of any sort to be found.
