Antique Victorian sterling silver butter dish with original glass bowl insert. Made London, England by Chas Fox, 1838. Consists of 4 parts: an underplate; a silver bowl; glass bowl insert; silver lid. Underplate is approx 8 1/2 inches in diameter. 5 1/2 inches high (total). Total weight, excluding the glass bowl is 675grams. Outstanding quality silver openwork. Almost entirely consisting of scrolling openwork with foliage borders. Undulating, generous borders of underplate reflecting on the same round bowl and lid - all the curves add to the richness and beauty of the design. The ultimate is the finial on the lid - a very solid poppy emerging from a lavish foliage cap. Wonderful detail and superb workmanship and aesthetic appeal. Hallmarked on each part: Victoria''s head, leopard for London, lion passant for sterling silver, date for 1838 and maker''s mark CF for Chas. Fox. All parts are in very good condition.
