Antique sterling silver and gilded silver snuff box. Made circa 1837 by Nathaniel Mills, Birmingham, England. Later engraved. Measurements: 3 3/8'' long; 2 1/8 inches wide. Weighs approx 125 grams. Rectangular box with protruding, rounded, raised borders. The lid has two levels with a concave, funnel - angled between the two border strips. Each border strip consists of a raised, rounded profusion of flowers and foliage, very finely moulded and with further engraved detail. Narrow engine turning on sides and outside bottom. The top, flat surface was later engraved: To F.W. Frankland from D.M.L., J.H.R & S.W.D''A.L 1887. The lid is joined to the bottom via a strong hinge all the way accross the back of the box. Inside the box is very richly gilded. Both lid and bottom of box are hallmarked: Lid has monarch''s head (William IV); N.M in a rectangle and lion passant. The bottom has an anchor for Birmingham, maker''s mark N.M as on the lid, date letter looks like our D, but probably O, for 1837, used with William''s head, although it was the year of Victoria''s ascention to the throne.
