Set of 6 Antique, very solid sterling silver tablespoons - in the Newcastle Pattern, made by the Gorham Silver Company, New York from 1895. Each spoon measures 8 5/8 inches long and together, they weigh 15 oz (approx 415 grams). Utterly Classic pattern - for sheer class and simple, understated elegance, this set cannot be beaten. The heavy sterling silver oval bowls with tapering handles, rounded at the terminal. THe edge of the handle with a gradated line of beads, each seperated from the others and between raised lines. The final raised ''jewel'' like a teardrop in shape, thus forming a heart with the inner raised line. Each spoon has the Gorham Company mark (Lion, anchor and G), raised STERLING, a diamond shaped lozenge with an E in it, which indicates ''extra heavy'' - referring to the quality of the silver. The same pattern was made in different weights/qualities and this is the ultimate best. THe engraved name Smith Patterson & Co most probably refers to a retailer in Boston. Very good condition.
