Victorian, circa 1860 Staffordshire fox and swan spill vase. Fox is crouched next to a fence, ready to pounce on a swimming swan. Dull gilt line to base and rim of spill. Applied shredded clay decoration to tree and around swan. Similar piece illustrated figure 2969, page 252 Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Generally good. No cracks. No hairlines. Small chips to some of the shredded clay. A few paint losses to ground, spill and fox. Slight rubbing to gilt. Kiln effects: shrinkage line to the top left side of archway; all over crazing. Old restoration to the top of the spill vase. 12.5ins high, 8ins wide
