Victorian, circa 1860 Pair Staffordshire spill vases, each modeled as a stag standing before a tree. A large green snake (python?) is entwined around the tree and stag. Stag legs molded free. Dull gilt base line. Painted mark to underside. Similar pair illustrated figure 2923/2924, page 245, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Generally good. Right facing: Paint losses to spill rim, snake and ground. Kiln effects: small shrinkage crack to hip, reverse of neck and lower base edge at reverse. Left facing: Paint loss to eyes, muzzle, snake and ground. Kiln effects: shrinkage crack to reverse of front right ankle; slight forward lean. 10.5ins high
