Victorian, circa 1860 Large Staffordshire spill vase modeled as a hunter with his russet dog, standing in front of a tree with a dead game bird on the ground in front. Dull gilt decoration and base line. One arm and leg of the hunter are molded free, along with his gun, the dog''s hind leg and head. Shredded clay decoration to the ground and spill. Similar piece illustrated figure 1823/1824, page 56, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Good. No hairlines. A few small paint losses and scratches to reverse of cloak. Some rubbing to gilt. Kiln effects: firing pit to reverse; piece of kiln detritus to the hunter''s right leg and another to hat feathers. Repaired crack to lower base edge. Restoration of gun end. Retouching to the dog, bird''s chest and tree. 14ins high
