Victorian, circa 1860 Large Staffordshire spill vase depicting a classic Staffordshire ''entertainment'' piece known as ''The Rival''. Modeled as a couple standing beside a tree, from behind which a man is knelt spying on them. Dull gilt base line and decoration. Shredded clay decoration to tree. Similar piece illustrated figure 1203, page 328, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 1, by A.& N. Harding. Good. No cracks. No hairlines. Some small flakes to upper and lower base edge. Slight rubbing to gilt. Restored chip to the lady''s pink overskirt. Retouched flake to the standing gent''s nose, front of spill rim and upper base edge. 12.5ins high
