A Pair of Rare Continental Faience Tureens in the form of Snails, Probably Holitch, Circa 1760-70 Each whimsical figure with a slightly different flower finial on top of the snail''s shell, hand decorated in polychrome glazes, with the top of the shell forming the lid of the container. Dimensions: ;5 inches (12.7cm)long ;x 2-1/2 inches (6.4cm) deep ;x 3 inches (7.6cms) high. Provenance: The Muriel S. Butkin Estate Auction Reference: The Faience factory in Holitch ( from The Museum of Decorative Arts, Prague) The oldest faience factory in the Austro-Hungarian empire, was founded under the patronage of Francis Lorraine, the consort of the Empress Maria-Theresa. In 1786 the Emperor Josef II ordered the production of cream-ware. Holitch faience was inspired chiefly by English production. It peaked at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries with pieces of elegant classicist shapes and refined hand- painted decoration.
