In a response to the Cold War, many items had a patriotic theme. This minuteman tile was made by the Mosaic Tile Company in 1957, and was a salesman''s sample. The ''Patriot Series'' was designed by David Fink, and was touted in period literature as ''the new note for school walls''. The advertisement goes on to describe the series as ''the great events of early American history in fresh, modern design
in tile!'' and to ''feature these multi-color glazed inserts in tile walls of corridors, classrooms, libraries, washroom, and auditoriums. (Ideal for home nurseries too.)'' More commonly seen in the 6'' x 6'' format, the tiles were also used as giveaways by the Lane Furniture Company (remember those cedar chests?). The glaze on this tile has a frosted quality and is in perfect condition. It retains the firmly affixed paper label on the rear describing it as a sample and the design number 528.
