Large by Moravian standards, this six inch tile depicts a simple stick figure of a man. If I remember correctly, this image was borrowed from a belt given to Wm Penn by the native Americans. The figure is deeply impressed and glazed in green, the rest of the tile left in a raw red clay. As with most larger Moravian tiles, the clay used was prone to warp and crack in the drying and firing process. Whereas most potters would throw damaged items away, Henry Chapman Mercer embraced the hand made quality and admired the flaws. Unmarked on the back.
