Victorian, circa 1890 Majolica sweetmeat dish, modeled as a brown mythological sea horse (hippocampus) with a shell shaped dish resting on its back. Ground naturalistically molded to look like waves. Turquoise glaze to shell interior. Ochre glaze to underside with green painted mark. Fair. No cracks. No hairlines. Chip to mane and right hoof. Flaking to mane, ears, rim of dish and base. Small flake to horse''s nose. Kiln effects: uneven glaze application to interior of dish; glaze pops to the tail; kiln detritus caught in the glaze to the waves, just in front of left hoof. Old restoration of left ear, tip of tail and dish. 4.5ins high by 7ins wide
