A stunning Spode's New Stone tray, or handled comport, in an early 'Japan' pattern, reminiscent of contemporary Mason's patterns or the slightly later 'Amherst Japan' pattern. Underglaze blue, with masses of overpainting by hand - iron red, cobalt blue, turquoise and green, highlighted with rich gilding in excellent order. The tray having handles in the form of stylized twigs and branches that continue onto the back. In 1st class condition, showing little sign of wear in its 180+ years. Two are available for sale - rare to find in this condition. Impressed 'Spode's New Stone' and painted number 3875 (by 1824 the Spode pattern books were up to 4000).
