Victorian, circa 1870 Holdcroft Majolica jardiniere with a maiden''s head molded as a handle on either side. Decorated with garlands of leaves, ribbons and flowers trailing over floral buttons. Cobalt ground with brown patterned band around rim and base. Four feet molded as turquoise and ochre flowers. Turquoise interior. Mottled green and brown underside with three stilt marks, impressed maker''s mark ''HOLDCROFT'', ''B'' and ''3''. Similar piece illustrated on page 106, Abrams ''Majolica A complete History and illustrated Survey'' by Karmason & Stacke. Fair. Hairlines to interior, one visible to exterior. Flake to lilac flower on garland. Kiln effects: some cobalt glaze run; stained crazing to interior. Restored chips to white flowers on garlands.
