Victorian, date cipher for 1866 Large Minton Majolica heron and fish ewer, modeled by Hugues Protat. The heron stands amongst reeds and lily pads with a large gray fish in its beak. The fish forms the handle and spout. Fine molding and clear bright glazes. ''H. PROTAT'' incised to the base. Green glaze and three stilt marks underneath the base, along with impressed maker''s marks ''MINTON'', ''1241'' and date cipher for 1866. Similar piece illustrated on page 57, Abrams ''Majolica A complete History and illustrated Survey'' by Karmason & Stacke. Generally good. No hairlines. One tiny chip to the reeds. No flakes. Kiln effect: small glaze miss to the edge of one lily pad. Repair across heron''s beak and neck. 21.5ins high
