Circa 1820-1840 Chinese Export Blue Canton Cider Jug with cover. Cider Jugs in blue canton and especially in rose medallion and rose mandarin are very rare. This is one that we recently purchased out of a Estate in the Washington, D.C. Area. This one measures 6 1/2" to the highest point of the handle and 7 1/2" to the top of the foo dog finial mounted on the top of the cover. All cider jugs have a inner pierced strainer behind the spout and were possibly made for hot punch or mulled cider with the spices and lemon seeds filtered by the strainer. These cider jugs can not be poured without holding the lid to prevent it from falling off. The foo dog finial and twisted handle of this cider jug exemplify early, good quality details. Cider jugs like this one date from the late 18th to early 19th century. This cider jug is in Excellent Condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. We also have a Blue Canton Very Large Pitcher/Jug coming in from the same estate. Should be in our inventory by January 1, 2010 and even might be here for Christmas.
