The bird’s head ewer had a long history in the Middle East. In ancient Iran, for example, they were used as ritual vessels and frequently referenced in Persian poetry. Among Zoroastrians the cockerel was revered because its crowing heralds the day and drives away the demon infested night. Later tradition records that the Prophet prohibited men from cursing this bird. Sassanian silver versions of the bird ewer were exported to China and reproduced in porcelain as “phoenix-headed†ewers
