Circa 1850 Chinese Export Kendi. A Kendi is a well known form in the Southeast Asian repertoire of vessels and it has played a significant role in the rituals and daily life More »
Circa 1850 Chinese Export Kendi. A Kendi is a well known form in the Southeast Asian repertoire of vessels and it has played a significant role in the rituals and daily life of the region since ancient times. Most kendi's are made of precious metals such as gold, silver or bronze. It was used as a ritual container for holy water. This Kendi was probably made in the mid-late 19th century for the european market. It has a a bulbous body, tall narrow neck, flange around the mouth and a mammary spout. This one is most unusual as it is decorated with a mandarin scene. This scene is continuous around the whole circumference of the bulbous body with vibrant colors and mountains in the background. This very unusual piece measures 14" in height and it's bulbous body measures 10" in diameter. It is a possibility that this Kendi was made for the Persian Market. « Less

This is a form that we have had in rose medallion several times and we have seen in canton and fitzhugh. But this pattern is so different than those and is really beautiful. It is absolutely fabulous. Decorated in a underglaze Yellow with greenery and pink roses and other flowers with birds and butterflies. Other colors in the mix are turquuoise. The molded spout and the rim at the top are nicely gilded. « Less

Circa 1820-1840 Chinese Export Blue Canton Cider Jug with cover. Cider Jugs in blue canton and especially in rose medallion and rose mandarin are very rare. This is one that we recently purchased out of a Estate in the Washington, D.C. Area. This one measures 6 1/2" to the highest point of the handle and 7 1/2" to the top of the foo dog finial mounted on the top of the cover. All cider jugs have a inner pierced strainer behind the spout and were possibly made for hot punch or mulled cider with the spices and lemon seeds filtered by the strainer. These cider jugs can not be poured without holding the lid to prevent it from falling off. The foo dog finial and twisted handle of this cider jug exemplify early, good quality details. Cider jugs like this one date from the late 18th to early 19th century. This cider jug is in Excellent Condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. We also have a Blue Canton Very Large Pitcher/Jug coming in from the same estate. Should be in our inventory by January 1, 2010 and even might be here for Christmas. « Less
