Winged putti frolic and play instruments in a circle around the body of this rare humidor by the Atlantic Terra Cotta Company. Best known for their work in and around New York City, they provided architectural detail to some of the finest buildings at the turn of the 20th Century. The base of this piece is only marked with an incised ''F22A^'' but I have had an identical example that was marked ''ATLANTIC''. The acanthus leaved cover also bears the same incised number on the underside. The condition should be considered excellent due to the fragile nature of the clay and the high relief, but there are several flakes to the highest points of the design and the lid has a small chip on the ''sleeve''on the underside. Allover it is an exceedingly rare example by one of the East Coast''s premiere architectural firms.
