Victorian, circa 1890 Staffordshire figure depicting a girl standing on a circular base entitled ''RED MAID. BRISTOL'' in black indented capitals. She is holding a basket in her left hand and is wearing the uniform of The Red Maids school in Bristol which consisted of a straw bonnet with a white linen shawl and apron worn over a red dress. This school, along with The Colston school and George Muller''s school, were founded in Bristol by philanthropists to care for the poor and orphaned. Decorated all round. Vent hole and painted mark to underside. Similar piece illustrated figure 2218, page 142, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Good. No cracks. No hairlines. No chips. Very minor paint loss to shoes. Some wear to dress and basket. Restoration to brim of bonnet. 5.5ins high
