Victorian, circa 1860 Staffordshire watch holder modeled as a Postulant (a candidate for admission into a religious order) and a nun standing either side of the watch holder. Above the watch holder is an alcove surmounted by a cross, with the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus inside. Angel molded beneath the watch holder. Dull gilt decoration and base line. Two vent holes to reverse. Painted mark to underside. This piece represents the Postulant entering into the convent and exiting as a nun. Similar piece illustrated figure a1779, page 147, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 3, by A.& N. Harding. Generally good. No hairlines. A few small flakes to base edge. A few minor paint losses to angel''s hair. Rubbing to gilt. Kiln effects: overall crazing; stain to reverse of watch holder; glaze misses to underside and another to base front. Repaired shrinkage crack to underside. Two restored chips to cross. Retouched flakes to the nun''s clothing. Retouched flake to nose of postulant and nun. 12.75ins high
