Pre-Victorian, circa 1820 Staffordshire titled figure of the Widow. Modeled on a naturalistic mound upon a square plinth base, with brown line. The widow is sat in front of a tree, holding twigs, with a barrel to one side. A young boy stands beside her, also holding twigs. Boy''s legs and the widow''s arms are molded free. Decorated all round. Vent hole to underside. Fair. Chipping to the shredded clay. Small flake to dress. A few paint losses to ground and dress. Kiln effects: a few glaze pops to cloak edge; kiln detritus caught in the glaze to lower base edge at reverse; stray spot of red enamel to base on left side and another to boy''s right leg. Retouching to her nose, chin and the ground. Restoration of her right hand, twigs and the boy''s left foot. Restoration to tidy tree trunk where missing bocage would have been originally. Made-up shredded clay where originally a ewer would have sat on the ground by her left foot. 9.5ins high
