Pre-Victorian, circa 1820 Staffordshire Pearlware figure of Cleopatra modeled in a recumbent pose on a rocky, floral base. She is wearing a seductive floral robe, and is asleep with a serpent wrapped around her arm. Decorated all round. Hollow underneath. Similar piece illustrated figure 37, page 148, ''English Earthenware Figures 1740-1840'' by Pat Halfpenny. Based on the play ''Antony and Cleopatra'' by William Shakespeare. It is based on real events of ancient times, a tragedy and also a story of passionate love. It tells the story of an affair between Mark Antony, one of the three who rule Rome after the assassination of Julius Caesar, and Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt. Good. Small, shallow chip to underside. A few small flakes to her toes. Repair to right arm. Restored chips and flakes around the lower base edge. Retouching to the base. 8.5ins high, 12ins wide
