Victorian, circa 1890 Staffordshire figure depicting a boy and girl standing side by side on an oval base entitled ''GEORGE MULLERS ORPHANS BRISTOL'' in black indented capitals. She carries a basket and he carries a bag. Both children are wearing the uniform of the school founded by George Muller. This school, along with The Red Maids school and Christ''s Hospital school, were founded in Bristol by philanthropists to care for the poor and orphaned. Decorated all round. Vent hole to reverse. Painted mark to underside. Similar piece illustrated figure 2219, page 142, Schiffer''s ''Victorian Staffordshire Figures 1835-1875'' Book 2, by A.& N. Harding. Good. No cracks. No hairlines. No chips. Small flake to lower base edge at side. Kiln effect: some stray spots of cobalt glaze to her cape and arms. Retouching to shoes and brim of cap and bonnet. 5.75ins high
