Pair of Staffordshire black and white spotted and extruded clay fur lion-dogs (poodles), each carrying a basket of fruit. Made in England. 19th century. 3 3/4 inches tall. 4 3/4 inches front to back of animal. Each dog modelled standing free of any base, curling tail ending in a pom-pom. Big fluffy ears and front of animal with extruded clay fur, giving a woolly texture. The rest of the body is spotted black on white. Grey paws with finely modelled toes. Faces beautifully painted with large eyes outlined in black and orange-brown irises. Little whiskers deliniated. Modelled detail of nostrils and mouth within black snout. Each animal holds a yellow basket of red fruit - lovely detail. No marks. The dog with head on the left has a little crazing and his tail was broken off (and simply glued together).
