An Italain Faience Polychrome Master Salt In The Form Of A Lady With Elaborate Costume, Ariano Irpino Region, 18th Century The lady supports a shaped basin marked "S" with open scroll work base; small chips. Known as Ariano di Puglia until 1930, Ariano Irpino can trace its ceramics roots back to Greco-Roman times; this, combined with Islamic influence seen ;in the work (due to the proximity of Saracen-ruled Lucera), made the region''s faience and majolica a major part of its trade in the Middle Ages.
