A stunning Spode’s New Stone scalloped lozenge shaped dish in an early ‘Japan’ pattern, reminiscent of contemporary Mason’s patterns or the slightly later 'Amherst Japan’ pattern. Underglaze blue, with masses of overpainting by hand - iron red, cobalt blue, turquoise and leaf green, highlighted with rich gilding in excellent order. Indeed the plate is in 1st class condition, showing little sign of wear in its 180+ years. Four are available for sale - rare to find in this condition. Impressed 'Spode’s New Stone’ and painted number 3875 (by 1824 the Spode pattern books were up to 4000). Measurements are 10.50 X 7.25" $525 each, + shipping.
