A Chinese Export Armorial Soup Plate, ; Arms of Louthian or Lothian, Circa 1768 Of octagonal form, centering the arms of Louthian with the motto Non dormit Qvi Custodit continuing to a rim painted with floral sprays and birds. Diameter 8 5/8 inches (22 cm). Condition: ;very minor chip to front & back touched in. Reference: Chinese Armorial Porcelain, Vol. I, David Sanctuary Howard ;p. 561 where he writes "The arms, probably copied from a bookplate, are of Louthian, or Lothian." The arms are Argent on a mount in base proper a pine tree verte, a talbot tied thereto of the second and from a branch a bugle horn pendant of the second all within a border of the third. "The motto Non Dormit qui custodit (Who guards does not sleep) rest on a bridge with the view of a port-probably the Firth of forth-while on one side is an urn and on the other a tombstone with the date MDCCLXV111 (1768). ;The urn has a warrior finial holding a halbert. The Louthians are an Edinburgh family who lived at Overgogar, with a cadet branch at Kingsbarns."
