Victorian, circa 1880 Holdcroft Majolica compote molded in the form of a putto merman/mermaid, seated on a bed of seaweed, supporting a large brown scallop shell above its head. Circular base with brown shell surround. Pink interior. Gray underside with three stilt marks. Generally good. No cracks. No hairlines. A flake to one shell on the base, and some small flakes to rim. Some wear to interior. Kiln effects: glaze pops to underside of large shell; some staining to putto body and face; glaze run down back from hair; some stray blue glaze spots and a glaze miss to shell interior. Repair to where the shell joins the stand, and to the smaller shell on top of the putto''s head. Restored rim chips. 7.5ins high
