Kashan Bowl with Seated Figure - AMD.08, Origin: Central Asia, Circa: 1300 AD, Dimensions: 2.50" (6.4cm), high x 7.6" (19.3cm) wide, Collection: Islamic Art, Style: Kashan, Medium: Fritware, The “monumental style” of lustre painting is derived from the Egyptian Fatimid styles. The style is characterised by large-scale motifs and the bold way in which the decoration is dominated in central figures. All motifs are shown reserved in white against a ground of solid lustre which is articulated through large and fleshy arabesques, or static and angular Kufic inscriptions, though clothes or animal coats are rendered by decorations in the lustrous pigment. The motif of the cross-legged figure is one that came into the Middle East from Central Asia in early Islamic times.
