The cover engraving is a signed Thomas Nast cartoon titled, "The Minute-Man Fixed By The Spirit Of 76." It shows an Uncle Sam type figure with rifle stepping on a Jeff Davis Democratic slate. A lamb wears a New Hampshire scarf.
