The engraving is a political cartoon titled, "Circumstances Alter Cases. U. S. G. Let us Clasp Hands over the Bloody Chasm!" It shows Grant extending a hand to a bearded man with a plaque marked, "Gratz Brown." The White House and Capitol dome are in the background. It is signed, "Th:Nast."
