A Portuguese majolica palissyware ceramic candlestick of a monkey figure on a tree trunk with musgo (moss) decoration, mounted as a bouillotte lamp on a wooden base with a movable black-painted tole shade with arrow adjuster. Probably by ceramist M. Mafra Caldas, after Bernard Palissy (1510--1590). An unusual and rare ceramic! Note: Overall dimensions: 21 3/4" H x 12" dia. Wood base dimensions: 5" dia. x 1 1/8" H.
