This lamp has been in my family for generations, belonging first to my Great Grandmother who was 12 when slavery was abolished. It has a brass base stamped with 1729. The glass shade is hand painted with birds. It may have originally been a gas lamp because there is a space in the top of the shade where a piece was added to convert it to electricity. This lamp has all original parts.
