For sale is a wonderful piece of Art Glass made by The Steuben Glass Company of Corning, New York. The Item is a Hand Blown "Melon Ribbed Perfume/Cologne Bottle" and it is done in the Verre de Soie Style of Glass. This was Frederick Carder's Favorite Glass he formulated. Verre de Soie literally means "Glass of Silk". When you run the exterior of the Perfume across your face it really feels like Silk!! The Perfume is a nice size as it stands 4 1/2" tall to the top of the stopper and is 3" in diameter.
The Perfume Body displays a Milky White Iridescence with a Green Jade Flame Shaped Stopper. This is such a wonderful and gracefully shaped perfume. This shape is definitely a Steuben Trademark as it is a Melon Shape. This is very organic in appearance. The Perfume displays wide Heavy Vertical Ribs that appear to be blown out at the bottom like you would see in a real Gourd. These Vertical Ribs rises up from the round bottom in between the Blow-Outs and softly fades as it reaches the top lip.
The Perfume is considered to be in excellent condition as there are no cracks, nicks, chips or dings. The Stopper is in equally as good of shape. The Perfume appears to have been well taken care of during its life. This Perfume is unsigned as this Style "Verre de Soie" usually carried a paper label. The piece does display the counter sunk Polished Pontil. This is the sign of Quality Hand Blown Art Glass.
Steuben Art Glass is some the Highest Quality Glass you can own. At the turn of the Century LCT Tiffany Studio's Favrile line was their main competitor and Steuben fared equally as well. Steuben created some of the nicest Art Glass Vases the World has ever seen.
This is Design #2183 in the definitive Steuben reference, Paul Gardner's, The Glass of Frederick Carder, page 240. This is Design #1455 in The Steuben Club Website's Shape Gallery. The statement is added that the #2183 is the same as Shape #1455. There were 8 sizes in this shape. Some refer to this shape as a Perfume but the proper shape is Cataloged as a Cologne by Steuben.
